King record Stereo Lab series

The King Record Stereo Lab 33RPM series, launched in 1975, precedes the later Super Analogue series. It introduced several uncompromising standards: Japanese cutting and pressing, half-speed mastering, an entirely limiter-free signal path, and a custom 300-watt tube amplifier driving a Neumann SX74 cutterhead. Unlike the Super Analogue series, which later utilized 180g vinyl and the Neumann VMS80 system, the Stereo Lab series was pressed on high-quality 140g vinyl. To preserve the absolute widest dynamic range and deep bass response without overcrowding the physical space on the disc, the engineers strictly targeted a maximum playback time of 15 minutes per side ( in reality, they haven't always succeeded ). To enforce this strict limitation, King Record had to adopt one of production strategies depending on the source material:

1. Spreading the Program Across More Sides (Multi-Disc Splits)

When an album exceeded the 15-minute threshold per side, the engineers refused to compromise groove pitch and depth. Instead of squeezing the music onto a single LP, the program was expanded across multiple sides (e.g., turning a standard single LP into a double LP ).

2. Reducing the Musical Program (Track Omissions)

If keeping the release confined to a single, affordable record was a priority, the production team chose to trim the tracklist to keep each side safely under 15 minutes.
